SHELF LIFE

Shelf Life is an acoustic indie rock artist from Philly, who recently released Alright, Okayyy on June 28, 2016.

The album features many unique, yet cohesive sounds. Songs vary from more psychedelic instrumentals like “Adult Swim Bumper” to lo-fi, dreamy tracks like “Ybba Rof” to more raw acoustic tunes such as “Unhealthy”.

My favorite song off of the album is “Mortal Bus Boy". Ironically enough, I listened to this song on the bus as I made my way through the city in the rain. I closed my eyes and rested my head against the window. I listened as each of the individual elements of sound weaved in and out and stacked themselves on top of each other to create this inexplainable hypnotic sound. I listened to the relaxed melody as the intensity progressively built into a brief thunder of sound before ending abruptly on a quiet note. Moments later it was my stop, as if it was scored specifically for my commute.

I’ve mentioned more than a couple times that I’m a fan of melancholy melodies and this album does not disappoint in that department. Having said this, “Gown” is another one of my favorite tracks off this album for that reason. It features some hauntingly relatable lyrics--

“Scared of growing old

alone.

Fear that grows as I slow

it down.”

These words contrast nicely against the subtle rain sounds and acoustic guitar in the background.

All in all, this album is worth a listen. Fans of artists like Alex G, Fox Academy, and dandelion hands would really enjoy this album.
